Every dealer service lane hands the customer one: a sheet of checkboxes with green, yellow, and red columns, a scribbled tire depth, and a signature line. The multi-point inspection — MPI, and you will see 27-point, 30-point, or 50-point versions of the same idea — is the most standardized ritual in auto repair, and most independent shops run some version of it whether they call it that or not.
Here is what actually belongs on one, how it differs from the other inspections your customers confuse it with, and why the paper version quietly costs you the work it finds.
What a multi-point inspection actually is
A multi-point inspection is a structured walk of the whole car against a fixed checklist, done whether or not anything seems wrong. That last part is what makes it an inspection rather than a diagnosis. A customer who comes in for a noise gets a diagnosis of the noise; a customer who comes in for anything gets, in a shop that runs MPIs, the same systematic look at the same list of items every time.
The point of the fixed list is that nothing depends on the tech’s mood or the day’s workload. The car that came in for an oil change leaves with its brakes, tires, fluids, belts, and lights actually looked at — and, in a shop that does it right, a record of what was found.
What’s on a typical MPI
The exact count is marketing — a “50-point” inspection mostly splits the same systems into more checkboxes. What matters is that the list covers:
- Tires and wheels — tread depth per corner, wear pattern, pressure, visible damage.
- Brakes — pad or shoe thickness, rotor condition, lines and hoses, parking brake.
- Fluids — engine oil, coolant, brake, power steering, transmission where the dipstick still exists, washer. Level and condition both.
- Battery and charging — terminals, hold-down, age, a load test if the tester is at hand.
- Belts and hoses — cracking, glazing, seepage at the clamps.
- Steering and suspension — play in the linkage, shock and strut condition, bushings, CV boots.
- Lights and wipers — every bulb, blade condition, washer spray.
- Under the car — leaks by location, exhaust condition, visible corrosion.
- Cabin basics — HVAC blows hot and cold, horn works, warning lights on the dash.

MPI vs DVI vs state safety inspection
These three get collapsed into “inspection” by customers, and untangling them is worth thirty seconds of any writer’s script.
A state safety inspection is a legal pass/fail check that only some states require. It answers one narrow question — may this car legally be on the road — against a minimum standard. It is not a condition report, and passing one tells a customer almost nothing about what is wearing out.
A multi-point inspection is the checklist itself: the shop’s own systematic condition report, no legal force, far broader than any state minimum.
A digital vehicle inspection is not a different inspection — it is the same MPI, delivered differently. The tech walks the same list, but each finding is marked Green, Yellow, or Red on a phone, with a photo of the actual worn part, and the customer gets the result as a link they can open and look at. Same walk, different landing. The industry sells DVI as its own category, but the honest framing is that a DVI is what an MPI becomes when it stops being paper.
Where the paper version dies
Run the paper MPI’s results forward and watch what happens to them.
The tech fills out the sheet at the car, or — more often — from memory at the counter, which is where the fourth and fifth findings get lost. The writer reads the yellow items aloud at pickup, while the customer is standing with their keys out and their card already tapped. The customer nods, takes the sheet, and it lands in the floor mat of the passenger seat, where it stays until the next car wash.
Nothing on that sheet was wrong. But a verbal summary at pickup is the worst possible moment to sell deferred work — the customer has already decided what today costs — and a checkbox marked “brake pads: yellow” is a claim, not evidence. The finding existed for about ninety seconds, and then it evaporated.
That is the case for doing the same inspection digitally, and it is a logistics case, not a technology one: the finding needs to reach the customer before pickup, in a form they can look at on their own time, attached to a price they can say yes to. A photo of the pad at the wear bar, next to a job with a number on it, sent as a text while the car is still on the lift — that is the same MPI, minus the floor mat.
What happens after the inspection
The checklist is the start of a process, not the end of one. In a shop that runs the loop properly:
- Green items go on record as checked and fine — proof of the look, and what makes the rest credible.
- Yellow and Red findings become estimate lines, priced by the service writer.
- The customer sees each finding next to its price and approves the ones they choose — job by job, not all-or-nothing.
- Declined work stays on the vehicle’s record, so next visit starts with “last time we noted the belt” instead of a blank sheet.
A shop that inspects every car and captures none of it into estimates has bought the labor of inspection and thrown away the product.
